How To Benefit From Being Bored



Boredom is oftentimes an emotional state of being underwhelmed. We tend to get very uncomfortable when we feel bored, and seek any distraction. The internet is filled with endless ways to satisfy this boredom. When the distraction succeeds, we continue to leave the problem of boredom unsolved. We have learned to overuse these remedies by spending countless hours mindlessly entertaining ourselves when we should be welcoming this feeling of monotony. 

Here are 2 reasons being bored can actually benefit you.


  1. Boredom creates longing for novelty. My favorite TikTok sound is from David Phillips, “Use the weekend to build the life you want, not to escape the life you have.” Now,  replace “the weekend” with “boredom” and read again. We can relate this idea to using boredom to its full potential. We naturally seek this feeling of newness in our lives. We have an innate connection with creativity, and boredom actually stimulates this. It causes us to turn inwards, allowing us to discover new ideas. Without this feeling, we would not be who we are; imaginative and have a curiosity for our life potential. Incredible achievements come from the dis-ease we have with where we are in our current lives. 

  2. Boredom is good for your mental health. Stepping away from the overflow of information that we are constantly fed can welcome rest and daydreaming, allowing an escape from your day to day endeavors. When we learn to pay attention to the cues coming from our discomfort, we can start our discovery of why and look for resolutions.


Now create a detox goal from the distractions of your daily life.

  • You can simply put your phone down during the in-between moments of your day; when you’re standing in line, waiting for dinner to cook, at a traffic light, etc

  • Set a daily goal to stay away from screens for ‘x’ amount of time 

  • Or go as far as a weekend detox
